Introduction

The IRS has started phasing out check payments, so now clients will need to pay through the IRS website ‘direct pay’ website or through their ID.me accounts. The direct-pay website is for one-time payments, with no account needed, whereas an ID.me account lets you log in and make payments, view balances and transcripts, and more. This guide gives a brief overview of how to pay your taxes through these portals, both of which can be accessed here.

Pay the IRS by logging in via ID.me

What’s ID.me?

ID.me is a secure digital identity platform through which you can access tax information from the IRS including transcripts, or balances, or access other government services such as the Social Security administration or the Department of Veterans Affairs.

How to make an account

Creating your ID.me account involves verifying your ID, including uploading a scan of your identification and uploading a selfie or a short video call where you confirm your identity. Log in or create an account here.

How to pay using ID.me?

Please take a look at our guide here.

Pay the IRS via their direct-pay portal

You can also make individual payments via the IRS’s direct-pay portal. This involves verifying your identity by answering questions about previous tax returns. Please take a look at our guide about using this payment method here.
