What is direct pay?
You can make individual payments via the IRS’s direct-pay portal. This includes normal tax payments, estimates, or more, for both business and personal returns. You need to verify your identity by answering questions about previous tax returns in order to make payments.
What payment methods are available?
How do I do it?
Navigate to the IRS Direct Pay website and follow the steps below in order to make your payment. Please note, the instructions may vary slightly depending on payment type, return type, etc. and that there may be some time between when the IRS updates their payment pages and when we can update this guide.
1. Choose how to pay (we are using ‘Direct Pay with Bank Account’ for this guide)
2. Follow the link to pay for individual or business tax (we’re doing individual for this guide.)
3. Click ‘Make a Payment’
4. Select the relevant return type, payment reason, and year.
First select what you’re applying your payment to.
Next, you will need to select the reason for the payment.
Finally, select the tax year that you are making a payment for.
5. Verify your identity using the information on a PAST tax return.
6. Fill out payment info
7. Approve and make payment
After this, your will be brought to the next page where you can double check the information you entered and write down your name one more time to ‘e-sign’, and then submit the payment.
